Micro-Releases
We’ve talked several times about Microsoft (this post links to many of them) and their moves to make bring themselves closer to their current online competition. This includes embracing online applications, taking advantage of online advertising, and having a presence in the digital media environment. An article on Techcrunch talks about some of the most recent releases that are good indicators that Microsoft will be able to adapt to better deal with the competition from Google. Personally, I still think Yahoo! doesn’t get enough credit when it comes to these two companies, but that’s not important at this point.
While it’s refreshing to see Microsoft making these kinds of releases, are they still too far behind? I don’t seem to recall any significant, mainstream platform for media, although there is a relationship with StupidVideos that might be exploited, and as of late, my posts have moved away from digital media and into mobility. Does that mean the company has fallen two steps behind?
I would never for one second think that Microsoft has ignored mobile technology, and some of the things that Mr. Gates himself talked about in the 90’s would suggest that the company is actually ahead of the competition in that category. These are obviously releases for now and the near future, and could set Microsoft up to leap-frog their competitors – if they don’t hit any major snags. Still, if they continue to have to play this game of catch-up, it’s only a matter of time before it catches up to them.
